"Invisible Children"
Youth Voices reporter Nouria recently had the opportunity to attend a screening of the documentary, "Invisible Children." The film's story, as told through interviews with Ugandan officials and citizens, brutally shows the effects of a war that has continued for years between the Lord's Resistance Army, and the Ugandan Government. Images of children being kidnapped and turned into soldiers struck a chord with the filmmakers to start a movement around the country to have the film screened on college campuses, in high school auditoriums, and other places to get people to act. After seeing the film, Nouria was moved enough to join a club at her own school to organize events to help the cause. However, not all of her peers had the same reaction.
About Nouria
Nouria is a senior at Walter Johnson High School who joined Youth Voices because it seemed like a great opportunity to inform adults about issues that concern teenagers. Her favorite part of the experience was interviewing people for her story, as well as working with everyone in the program. She felt challenged by trying to figure out what her story was and what message she was trying to send to the public. Nouria loves to watch Hindi movies, play the piano, hang out with friends, and listen to different types of music. She also enjoys learning about different cultures and would like to travel to the United Kingdom, India, and Eastern Africa in the near future. One major influence in Nouria's life is her family. Her parents are always trying to remind her and her younger brother about their culture by taking them on trips to visit relatives in Senegal and Guinea, while insisting that they speak Fulani and French.
