School Food and Obesity

As we all know, the number of people who are overweight is a problem. It's even more of a problem for adolescents. A 2004 survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control found that 17.4% of adolescents in the United States are overweight. A few years ago, Youth Voices explored the issue as it relates to African American females. This time, Youth Voices reporter Lindsay decided to find out if the cuisine being served at her school, which frequently consists of items high in caloric content and sodium, might be part of the problem.

LindsayAbout Lindsay

Lindsay is a sophomore in the Communication Arts program at Montgomery Blair High School where she enjoys participating in the Debate Team, Forensics Club, and the Youth and Government program. Lindsay also serves as a juror in the Montgomery County Teen Court and would like become an attorney in the future, focusing primarily on criminal and constitutional law. She enjoys studying government, as well as taking various media classes. Lindsay applied for Youth Voices because of her endless fascination with media's influence on society. Her favorite parts of the Youth Voices experience have been conducting interviews and working with mentors to draw conclusions and discover her own feelings on who is to blame on the issue of childhood obesity. Overall, she feels this has been a rewarding experience in which she has learned, grown, and enjoyed every minute of it! In her spare time, Lindsay loves to read, write, and collect vintage news magazines. She admires Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, and her mother, who have all served as role models, exhibiting the value of dedication and hard work.
