Applying to College

Eliza is a 12th-grader at the Holton Arms School in Bethesda Maryland, and like every other senior, has been trudging through the process of selecting and applying to college. However, unlike other students, Eliza has been given somewhat of an advantage when it comes to the admissions "game" (as she refers to it) since her parents are able to tap into the huge business of college counseling and test preparation. However, Eliza has begun to wonder if all the extra cash & effort is really worth it, and if the "game" truly plays out on a level playing field.

ElizaAbout Eliza

Eliza is a senior at Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, Maryland. She became involved in the Youth Voices program because of her love of print journalism and interest in pursuing other forms of news. Her favorite part of the experience has been having the opportunity to create a story that addresses a very real concern for her and her peers: college admissions. The process of editing has been the most challenging part of the experience in that it forced her to work with unfamiliar technology and formatting. Eliza would like to pursue a career in either journalism or law, and is currently deciding between New York University and the University of Michigan for college. Eliza has never eaten lobster and has a raging fear of jellyfish. Her favorite school subjects are History, Spanish, and English. She spends her free time reading, cooking, running and doing ceramics. Her sister, who will graduate from Duke University in May, has been a major influence in Eliza's life, acting as both a role model and best friend. Eliza also attributes much of her success to her parents, who have supported her fully in all her endeavors.
