Hi! My name is Xiomara and I’m a senior at Woodrow Wilson Senior High School in Washington, D.C. I’m a part of WAMU’s “Youth Voices” radio workshop because I want to major in journalism. I feel the workshop is a good opportunity to learn some new things that will help me in the future. My story is about Latinas and teen pregnancy.

There are several reasons why I decided to focus on this. First of all, I’m Latina. Second, I have a friend who got pregnant last year in my school. And third, last year there were several Latinas at my school who were pregnant.

So this makes me think “What’s happening with Latinas?” Is it culture, religion or something else influencing them? So it’s these questions that make me interested in this issue. Teen pregnancy is a reality in my community and I really want to know if this is only happening with Latinas or with teens from other communities too.

I really want to have answers for these questions. I think there are a lot of things that I can learn in this story. I look at my friend and I see how much her life has changed after having a baby. So I’m really wondering how can parents and friends get involved and help to address this issue.
